Metro Ethernet allows for the delivery of layer 3 routed services over a layer 2 provider infrastructure. Several key technologies including Ethernet, VLANs, IP, and MPLS comprise the Metro Ethernet product offering. Ethernet is the layer 2 access method between you and our routers. Ethernet does not require the use of a CSU/DSU or other specialized hardware making troubleshooting faster and easier. VLANs provide layer 2 separation of your traffic across our backbone similar to ATM permanent virtual circuits. This logical layer 2 separation provides an added layer of security over a shared backbone. IP provides traditional layer 3 services across the layer 2 infrastructure. MPLS is a mechanism for providing data transport from one node to the next and allows packet labeling to make forwarding decisions, rather than the packet contents.
