Metro Ethernet

Metro Ethernet is a fast, stable, and secure wide area network access method which leverages Ethernet, a familiar and trusted local area network technology. Metro Ethernet allows for the delivery of layer 3 routed services over a layer 2 provider infrastructure. Several key technologies including Ethernet, VLANs, IP, and MPLS together comprise the Metro Ethernet product offering. Ethernet is the layer 2 access method between customer and provider routers. Ethernet does not require the use of a CSU/DSU or other specialized hardware making troubleshooting faster and easier. VLANs provide layer 2 separation of customer traffic across the provider backbone similar to ATM permanent virtual circuits. This logical, layer 2 separation provides an added layer of security over a shared backbone. IP provides traditional layer 3 services across the layer 2 infrastructure.

Benefits generally associated with Metro Ethernet include:

  • Higher synchronous upload and download speeds
  • Lower monthly recurring costs
  • Lower equipment costs
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Familiarity of Ethernet extended from LAN to WAN
